Thank you for your service. If you're eligible for TRICARE and turning 65, or already have Medicare, it's important to understand how Medicare and TRICARE for Life work together.
TRICARE for Life is coverage for TRICARE-eligible people who have Medicare Part A and Part B. It works alongside Medicare.
For services both programs cover, Medicare pays first and TRICARE for Life pays after, often leaving little or nothing for you to pay.
To keep your TRICARE coverage, you generally must have Medicare Part A and enroll in Part B and keep paying the Part B premium.
TRICARE pharmacy benefits continue with TRICARE for Life, so many members don't need a separate Medicare drug plan.
Missing your Part B enrollment can cause a gap in your TRICARE coverage and a Medicare late enrollment penalty. Plan ahead during your Initial Enrollment Period, the 7-month window around your 65th birthday.
Some people with TRICARE for Life look at Medicare Advantage plans, and many don't need one. Every situation is different. Let's review yours together so you can decide with confidence.
